Thirteen Things about Same Gender Classes

Another 7 hour inservice given by Dr. Sax. Some very interesting information. Some useful, some not so useful. Decison will come soon to let us know if we will have a "pilot" program next year.

Here are 13 things that I learned.

1. The female brain has 20% higher blood blow per gram of tissue. The male brain is 8 % larger, (has some emply space)

2. In premature babies, weighing about 2.6 lbs, girls who had very soft music playing, gained 50% more weight and left the hospital 12 days earlier than those who didn't have music playing.

3. Music therapy did not work for prematue boys because they couldn't hear the music.

4. Girls will interact face to face with friends. Boys want to be shoulder to shoulder.

5. At 18 months of age, girls have a vocab. of 90 words and boys about 40 words.

6. Small groups do NOT work for boys.

7. Using LAST Names work better for boys.

8. Girls like eye contact, Boys feel threatened.

9. Girls will sit and listen, Boys need to move around.

10. Girls work well sitting in a cirle, Boys need straight rows.

11. Boys are motivated by dividing into teams, having someone in charge, shake on it, asking "are you ok with this"

12. Girls are motivated by knowing there are NO Favorites and that everyone has equal access to the teacher. Girls want to please.

13. In 1996 US vs. VMI. Same Sex Education is legal provided comparable courses, services and facilities are made available.

Interesting stats there. It is definitely true that the male and female brain differs. I've only got girls so I guess it's a little easier. :)

Thanks for sharing and have a lovely Thursday.

In my class, I have to strategically place the boys in small groups with girls. If I put them together...the assignment will never be finished. Funny, but the girls would finish it...and it would be pretty!! lol

This is something of a minefield. What does one do about boys who prefer to interact "like girls" (less combatitive, prefer consensus-decisions) and girls who prefer to interact "like boys" (dislike sitting in circles, dislike eye contact, prefer one point of origination for assignments)? I am female, and definitely fall into the latter category. I always got along better with my male classmates than my female classmates, right up through high school when I finally made some long-term female friends.

Very informative list. Lots of things you said are those things you go hmmm, once you said them you can say yea that's true, but you might not have thought of them before.

My 13 are up.

Interesting list. I have only boys but grew up with only sisters and the boys inability to sit still for even a few minutes never ceases to amaze.

So THAT explains why my son won't look me in the eye... I've got one of each gender, so yeah, I can see the truth in a lot of this.

Happy TT!
